Stress can't be ignored. We have to deal with stress and it totally depends on our attitude that how well do we address this issue. We need to be positive and optimistic to cope with stress. The problem related to stress is increasing at an alarming rate.

A large number of people in this world are suffering from depression and anxiety and if we ignore the symptoms then it can lead to hazardous physical and mental health issue.

Chronic stress increases the level of cortisol in the brain leading to a mood swing, depression, and anxiety. They also impact adrenal glands which further gives you a feeling of tiredness.

Stress Creates Free Radicals:

An important complication that arises because of stress is the creation of free radicals. These free radicals-unattached oxygen molecules damage the brain cells. In layman language, these free radicals do the similar damage as oxygen does to iron by initiating the process of rusting.

These free radicals punch holes in the brain cell wall, causing them to rupture and die.

In case stress is causing you to lose sleep, drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes etc then all these activities can further lead to the generation of free radicals. 



The other side effect of chronic stress is its tendency to make you tensed and unforgettable. The memory problem is one of the initial signs of chronic stress.

Let's understand it with an example. 

Suppose you are a person working in an IT company and due to your stress, you have forgotten a few appointments in the last months. This will again add more stress to your professional life further deteriorating your mental condition.

There have been lots of research on the emotional quotient attached to stress. Researchers have found that when you are stressed out then the electric signals in your brain related to factual quotient reduces and the areas in the brain possessing emotional quotient starts getting strong electric signals.

To make the condition worst, stress causes a vicious cycle of anxiety and fear.

Amygdala, an area in the brain, also known as brain's stress center. It has been observed that an increase in the stress level leads to an increase in the activity of the Amygdala which further increases the neural connection in this part of the brain.


Stress Halts Production Of New Brain Cells:

The production of new brain cells is very important for the health of the brain. One of the important impact of stress on mind is the halt in production of these new brain cells.

Similar to skin cells, every day all of us loses brain cells and in a similar way also gains brain cells.

To understand this phenomenon, first, we have to understand a biological term named Brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF).

BDNF plays a crucial role in keeping the existing brain cell healthy and also stimulating new brain cell formation.

BDNF can be thought of a fertilizer for the brain. It also offsets the negative effect of stress on the brain.

As discussed in the previous article, stress produces cortisol which negatively affects the brain health.

An increase in the production of cortisol hinders the BDNF production leading to fewer brain cells being formed. As a result, the person becomes more prone to mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and even Alzheimer's disease.


Stress Depletes Brain Chemicals:

The neurotransmitter is the chemical through which our brain cells communicate. Serotonin and Dopamine are the critical neurotransmitters responsible for a healthy brain. Serotonin is also called the "happy molecule" and Dopamine is called the motivational molecule. A little amount of Dopamine can make you lethargic, unfocused, unmotivated and depressed.
An individual low in dopamine level will use caffeine, sugar, alcohol or illicit drugs to boost the dopamine level.
Dopamine-based depression is accompanied by lethargy and lack of enjoyment in life. On the other hand, Serotonin based depression leads to anxiety and irritability.
