I am back again with yet another mind-boggling article. This time we are talking about stress management with self-help techniques. As discussed in the previous article we all get stressed and sometimes the reasons are very silly.Isn't it? The worst part is when we are stressed we don't behave in a natural way and sometimes we may react in a manner which can stress others as well leading to conflict or even irreversible damage to the relationship.Stress is not good for our health also.So it's better to minimize the side effects of stress using self-help techniques.

With each passing day, Life becomes more demanding and of course, our responsibilities keep increasing. You can't have more than 24 hours every day and your bills will keep coming.Though you can minimize your expenses, you can't reduce it to zero. You can find an additional source of income but it also has stress quotient attached to it.Remember no matter how stressful your life seems, there are always options to relieve the pressure and regain control.I have done it so you can also do it.

[Why stress management is so important for every individual?]

Trust me, Guys, Your life is at high risk in case you are living with high level of stress. The worst thing about stress is that it disturbs your physical and mental equilibrium and once disturbed you will start acting abnormally which will further put your family members and others close to you on stress and it will further lead to never-ending process.Stress can damage your thought process and will make you more prone to depression.Living continuously with stress can prevent you from living a healthy lifestyle.

[Stress Management Techniques #1-Identify the Source of Stress]

The first and foremost step in stress management is to find out and make a list of all the source of stress. It may take time to figure out all the source of stress but the major sources can be found out easily and you can start working on it.There are situations in life when you can't ignore the stress.Let me explain you with an example. The situations like unemployment, job changes, divorce etc can create a lot of tension and these situations can be controlled only after finding the solutions like getting employed, settling in the new job etc.

I would like to talk about the stress that is caused due to your habits, attitudes, and excuses.

Do you define stress as an integral part of your work or home life?

Do you blame others for your stress?

Do you consider stress as any other temporary problem?

Do you consider stress as normal?

Do you consider stress as a part of your routine?

Whenever I am under stress I ask myself the above questions and try to figure out if I have the satisfactory answer to these questions.Folk start writing about stress in your diary or start speaking about it to your close ones. You can even try making videos on the source of stress.Once you will start doing these activities then you will start thinking about the reason behind your stress. It is very important to think about the cause of stress. For me, a combination of all the three activities works because these activities force me to think about the smallest of the reason behind the stress.

I hope it works for you as well.

        [Stress Management Techniques #2-Practice 4 A's]

The 4 A's - Avoid, Alter, Adapt and Accept will definitely help you in stress management.

Always try to avoid the unnecessary stress-

Already discussed before in this article that there are reasons of stress which can't be avoided but there are many which can be avoided as well.

Every individual has a limitation and going beyond it can create a lot of stress.Whether it's your personal life or professional 'Learn to say NO' because if you will keep pleasing others then you will definitely be stressing yourself.Don't over commit. There is no shame in saying a BIG NO.Let others also know that like others you also need a work-life balance.Try to distinguish between 'should' and 'must' and give priority to 'must' and if needed say NO to 'should'.

You can segregate the cause of your stress into avoidable and unavoidable. After doing this you need to find the percentage of avoidable stress and unavoidable stress.Avoidable stress can be eliminated by putting small efforts and thus your overall stress level will reduce significantly.

Avoid Negative thought and People around you-

Hey Guys, always avoid negative energy around you. Those who try to create a negative environment around you or cause stress to you.Simply avoid or limit the interaction with the individual.

Manage your daily task-

Always keep a track of your daily task and see whether you have too much on your plate to perform.Don't forget to categorize the daily set of the task in high, medium and low priority.

It is always better to eliminate the task of low priority rather than taking stress to complete it on a daily basis.

Avoid task that brings stress to you-

Avoid the task that brings stress.Let's understand it with few examples. If you feel stressed out in the marketplace then try to avoid it.If you don't like ambiance simply leave the place. In case you hate buying grocery then do online shopping. If political speech or show brings irritation or stress then don't watch it.In short, try to avoid all the activities around you which bring stress.

Stress can be minimized and avoided if planned properly.

stress management strategies

We have discussed on the cause of stress which can be minimized or avoided but there are many reasons which can't be ignored.

What to do if the reason of stress can't be ignored?

How to react to the situation when stress can't be ignored or avoided?

Alter the situation-

If you think you can't avoid stressful situation then try to alter the situation.

It is always better to express your feeling rather than bottling them up-

If you are not happy with anyone or anything then speaks out.For e.g- In case you have an exam next day and your roommate is watching it in loud voice then ask the person to reduce the volume. The worst part of such scenario is that the resentment will build up if you don't raise your voice.

Keep in mind RESENTMENT is directly proportional to STRESS.

Be Flexible and Ready to Compromise-

Life is not the bed of roses.Everything in your life doesn't happen as per your expectation. In fact, 90 percent of the thing doesn't happen in my life as per my expectation. In this world, a lot of problems can be solved if the person involved is ready to change or be a bit flexible. If you have a problem with anyone's behavior and expect the person to change then be ready to bring change in your behavior as well.

Always be flexible like water which takes the shape of the container it is filled.

Being flexible will help you to reduce your stress. On the other hand, being adamant will increase your level of stress.

For e.g-There are four friends who have decided to go for a movie in the weekend.Three of them wants to watch a particular movie while the fourth one wants to watch some other movie. In this case, it is good to be flexible and go with the other three for the movie of their choice rather than being adamant and asking the other three friends to go for the movie of his choice.

Work-Life Balance-

A very important thing in today's world is to make a balance between your work and your personal life. Both of them needs time. You can't ignore any one of them.A mismatch can lead to a long-term unavoidable stress.Always look for a job which gives you an opportunity to spend sufficient amount of time with your family and dear ones.

ADAPT TO THE STRESSOR-

In case you are not able to change the stressor then change yourself. You change your expectation from the stressor.Try to view a stressful situation as an opportunity to excel. If you get stressed in a traffic jam then listen to the song of your choice or start a conversation with others stuck in the traffic jam.You can even read some interesting articles related to 'stress management'.

Be a long-sighted-

Look at the bigger picture. If you are in a stressful situation then ask yourself how important will it be in long run and is it really worth?
If the answer is Yes then hustle for it.
If the answer is No then focus your time and energy elsewhere.

You can't be Perfectionist always-

It's good to run behind Perfectionism but learn to be happy with 'good enough'.In order to achieve Perfection don't set your goals so high that it becomes the reason of stress.

Remember Perfectionism is a relative term and running behind it can be a never-ending cause of stress.

Learn to Practice Gratitude-

There are times when stress becomes heavy on you.Isn't it?I have faced similar situation numerous times. In those difficult moments, I simply try to divert my mind by thinking of my positive qualities and the positive things that happened in my life.

Practicing Gratitude will definitely give you an edge over others.

ACCEPT IT-You can't change everything as per your wish

You don't have control of all the things happening in your life.God can only control everything. There are instances when the cause of the stress is uncontrollable. For e.g- Death of the loved ones or illness due to some serious disease like Cancer etc.In such scenario, the best thing you can do is to accept the reality and move on.

I know it's not so easy.It takes times. The loss of loved ones is a huge loss for the entire family and each member of the family react to it in a different manner. Each individual has different ways to cope up with the stress.

Sometimes forgiving someone also eases out your stress. If someone has behaved badly or abused you then it's better to forgive and move on.Keeping the grudge beneath your heart will only be a creating stress for you and not to him.

Like many other people on this planet, I also have difficult moments. In those moments I have always preferred to express rather than keeping it deep in my heart. For me being expressive has always worked.Sometimes meeting neurologist can also help.
At times thoughts present in our unconscious mind creates a lot of trouble.

Life is a journey and not destination so enjoy every walk of life.

[Stress Management Techniques #3-Increase your Physical Activities]

If you ask me the equation between physical activities and level of stress, I would say stress is inversely proportional to physical activities. The more you involve yourself in physical activities the less you will feel the stress.

There are lots of ways to increase your physical activities.Trust me Guys when I am stressed out the last thing I would love to do is going to gym.But by physical activities, I don't only mean going to a gym.It can be as simple as going for a walk or swim.Even a series of small activities can build up into a very effective exercise.

I hope most of you will be aware of the fact that exercise releases endorphins that make you feel good.

stress management exercise techniques

  • Go for a trip.
  • Go for trekking.
  • Do swimming for 30 minutes every day.
  • Go for a walk after your dinner.
  • Join Gym.
I have mentioned few of the activities which I do.There are other number activities which increase your physical involvement.Kindly do comment in the comment section about your physical involvement when you are stressed out.

Doing regular exercise can help you to overcome even the worst of the stress. The high intensity of physical activities makes you tough and prepare you for a tougher life.

If you are mentally strong then you will feel less stressed.

Mental stability is inversely proportional to stress.

[Stress Management Techniques #4-Be a Party Animal]

Human Being is a social animal and we love to party. We all love the interaction with someone who understands us and at least hears our problems.A face-to-face interaction always acts as a natural healer. There are three kinds of personality introvert, ambivert, and an extrovert.

Introverts are those who love to have their own space. They are more comfortable in the small company of their loved ones. Though they are not very comfortable interacting with everyone but they love to interact and express their feeling in their friend circle. They take time to make friends but once they trust someone they are more than happy to share their feelings.

Ambiverts are those who behave like an introvert or an extrovert depending on the situation. At times they are outspoken and at times they keep to themselves.

Extroverts are party animals. They love to interact with anyone and everyone. They are outspoken and love to express themselves. They don't care at all what others think about them.

So it's always good to express yourself.Always keep in mind that the people you talk shouldn't always be the person who can fix your stress or can give you a solution to minimize your stress. They can be anyone who can listen to your problem.

The more you open up the better you will be at handling the stress.

Always try to build a network of trusted friends.Having friends with the positive attitude is always an asset.

There are times when you have to take the initiative if you want the person to be part of your networking or friend list.

  • Ask someone for concert or movie.
  • Call your old friend you have not talked for a long time.
  • Go out for a dinner date.
  • Volunteer yourself for some social work.
  • Spend time with your colleague after the office hours.

[Stress Management Techniques #5-Time Management]

Now, I have moved to the last stress management techniques of this blog post and this is about efficient time management.I have seen people getting stressed out because of poor time management.

Prioritize the daily task and take out time for yourself
In case if you have few stressful tasks to be performed every day then do it first so that you can enjoy rest of your day.Sometimes we get stressed out at the end of the day.In such situation go to late night party or do some activities which restore positive energy.

5 stress management techniques

Never over-commit to yourself
All of us have a limitation and no one else can know it better than yourself.Keep in mind your limitation before committing to anyone.Sometimes to impress others or to outperform our competitors we over commit to yourself leading to very stressful life.

Break the complex task into simpler ones
Always break your complex task into simpler ones.By doing so you will reduce your stress level and thus will be able to perform in a much better way.Divide the entire project into smaller projects and try to achieve the milestones step-by-step.By doing so the project which seems to you unachievable will be achieved in the given frame of time.

Before we conclude, let's have a look on some of the handpicked articles.

Never get scared of delegating responsibilities
